Laserhub: Lasertag entertainment centre in Crawley
Scores on the Doors
Laserhub is closed. I have ensured that deposits were returned to customers. I have been trying to find the best options for Laserhub, staff, employment in Crawley, the landlord and myself. Sadly Laserhub will not reopen. However, I am hoping to pass the reins to another lasertag company (a chain) to open in September in the same building.
Laserhub ran over 1000 parties a year. We employed and trained over 100 young people from the local area. When I was closely involved I can truly say that they were a pleasure to work with and a credit to themselves and their parents. At any one time, even throgh the recession, we employed up to 25 staff.
Some of the bands that we gave opportunities to in our Band nights went onto performing at Glastonbury and others grew in confidence and experience. We won two business awards and sponsored countless organisations in nearly nine yers of operation.
Laserhub broke new ground several times. This was sometimes controversial for example: before legislation on smoking we chose to ban smoking by staff because we had a strong ethos that staff would be role models doing a 'cool' job and they should not (even by the smell of smoke on clothes) encourage what is a dangerous habit in children.
Why close? Several reasons. We tried to expand several times. Some ideas were directed by CBC to large chains after much early work by laserhub, and our idea for an ice rink was stopped even after we had agreed the space. The value placed on being a smaller local business, even if not for profit, is not particularly valued and risks are often over stated; but ironically not expanding prevented us achieving economies and capitalising on local knowledge.
It has been reported in the press that I set up Discovery New School and was dismissed. This had an impact on Laserhub due to the time I had and have available to lead Laserhub. I had given initially a year free to the school project. After this my role absorbed over double the planned and paid time. I was later obligated to whistleblow as FD of the school after which I was dismissed when Chris Cook was Chair of governors. These investigations that I initiated continue and I feel a continuing moral responsibility to expose and to complete.
Laserhub needed a new lease, re-investment and a signifiant amount of my time. This was not possible as I enter into what may be two years of effort related to the events at the school. I prefer not to allow Laserhub to deteriorate in quality due lack of investment in time and capital.
I have received many personal messages regarding Laserhub (and the school) and we thank all those that sent offers of support and such very kind comments.
